DHA Australia issue EOI invitations – August 2025

Subclass 189 visa invitations issued 

On the 22nd August 2025, the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) issued invitations for Skilled Indepedent (Subclass 189) visa.

Occupations

As of posting, the DHA haven’t released the formal details of the occupations or points required.  We will provide these, when they are.

However from our experience,  client feedback and our industry collegaues  the occupation categories that recieved invitations include:

  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Construction professionals
  • Engineering
  • Trades
  • Scientists
  • Business professionals

Our take away 

After a significant period of time since the last Subclass 189 invitation round — November 2024 – this news is highly welcomed and a long time overdue.

It is understood that there is still room in migration cap numbers for further invitations during the 2025-26 financial year. The financial year runs from 1 July to 30 June.

Whilst the date of the next invite round is not known, if you want to be considered for the next invitation round, you should look at act promptly.  There are some steps that need to be undertaken. Which, on average, can take a number of months.

In addition, applicants may also be considered for state/territory nominated visa. These are the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) visa.

As reported recently, 8th August 2025, these  state nomionated visas haven’t opened yet for 2025-26. However they are likely to soon.

State/territority skilled occupation lists still to be confirmed 

The states & territories are still to release their occupation lists for their state nominated skilled visas for 2025 to 2026.

The state nominated visas  include the following:

  • Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) Visa – Nomination by a state/territory

As mentioned previously, these programs have been closed for a a number of months.

When  any of the states confirm thier skilled occupation lsits we will  post on this website  as soon as we can.

GSM (General Skilled Migration) visa invitations issued – June 2024

The DHA issued their final EOI invitations for the 2023 to 2024 financial year.

They  issued 5,292 invites for the Skilled Independent visa (Subclass 189).

Invited occupations & points

There was a range of occupations invited.There were also a range of points required for an invite as well. From trades with 65 to professionals.

An overview of the occupations invited and the points required are detailed below.

The following trades were invited at 65 points.

Western Australia have today – 1st July, 2024 –  announced a doubling of their skilled nomination program . It is expected that other states, such as South Australia.  will follow.

Given the focus on trades in this invitation round, as well as both the WA and SA governments public position on the need for Construction trades and professions there will be opportunities.

Closure of the WA State Nominated Migration Program applications for 2023-24

WA closes program  for 2023/24 

On the 2nd February 2024, effective immediately, WA have closed their state nomination program for the Subclass 190 & Subclass 491 visas.

Full details are available on their website – migration.wa.gov.au

There is no indication at present what occupations will be on the WA occupations lists for 2024-25. However the recent  WA list  may provide some guidance.

To be considered for nomination WA will require applicants to have an occupation on the appropriate list, meet any specific occupation requirements (e.g. years of experience, english language ability, registration) .

If you are considering applying for a state/territory nomination visa you should consider your options now.

Applicants will need to have evidence of their skills assessment, english language tests and work experience at a minimum.

DHA changes visa processing priorities

The Australia Department of Home Affairs (DHA) have again changed their processing priorities.

In September 2020 , during the COVID pandemic, the DHA prioritised 44 occupations from the Skilled Migration occupation List (SMOL).  Amongst others. the  included healthcare workers such as Nurses. This was in place until 28 October 2022.

As reported below,  week the processing priorities for skilled visa applications of the DHA,  has now changed again.

‘Visas in three days’ for teachers and nurses who want to come to Australia

This includes a change to the order of priority where the number one priority is “Visa applications in relation to a healthcare or teaching occupation”.  With priority given to visa application where the primary applicant is outside Australia at the time of visa application.

The Healthcare or Teaching Occupations this relates to:

  • ANZSCO Sub-major Group 25 – Health Professionals
  • ANZSCO Minor Group 241 – School Teachers
  • ANZSCO Minor Group 411 – Health and Welfare Support Workers
  • ANZSCO Unit Group 1341 – Child Care Centre Managers
  • ANZSCO Unit Group 2346 – Medical Scientists
  • ANZSCO Unit Group 2721 – Counsellors
  • ANZSCO Unit Group 2723 – Psychologists
  • ANZSCO Unit Group 2725 – Social Workers

Australia reopens to international travellers on 15 December, 2021

The DHA have confirmed that have reopened to vaccinated travellers as of 15 December, 2021. See the DHA announcement below.

” Reopening to international travel

Australia is reopening its border to vaccinated travellers. This is part of our step-by-step and safe reopening to the world. From 15 December 2021, fully vaccinated visa holders from the following cohorts will be able to travel to Australia without an exemption:

  • international students
  • skilled migrants
  • refugee/humanitarian, and
  • temporary and provisional family visa holders.

This was to begin from 1 December 2021, however the reopening was paused due to the emergence of the ‘Omicron’ COVID-19 variant.

As part of Australia’s reopening to fully vaccinated travellers, international safe travel zones have been introduced for New Zealand and Singapore. International safe travel zones with Japan and Korea will begin from 15 December 2021.

South Australia open up to offshore engineers

South Australia (SA) add 24 engineering occupations to their offshore nomination list 

Following SA opening up 70 occupations to offshore applicants in September, they are now opening up further.

Queensland opens skilled nomination program …

Skilled Migration to Queensland 

Queensland has finally opened its skilled nomination program to skilled workers living in Queensland.

The skilled visa program is currently  closed to offshore applicants. This will be reviewed in December 2021.

Eligible applicants can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) to be nominated by Queensland for either the

  • Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated (Permanent) visa
  • Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa

Eligibility criteria  

DHA Criteria

To be eligible for Queensland Nomination an applicant must meet the DHA criteria:

  • Meet the points-test of 65 or higher
  • have a postive skills assessment
  • be under 45 years of age
  • meet the English language requirements for the points test, or skills assessment authority

Migration Queensland criteria requires;

  • a points test result of 80 for Subclass 190 visas or 65 points for the Subclass 491
  • an occupation* on the DHA list of eligible skilled occupations
  • have proficient english
  • Subclass 190 applicants to provide evidence of 6 months work experience  (minimum 35 hours per week) in your nominated occupation in Queensland immediately prior to submitting your EOI
  • Subclass 491 applicants to provide evidence 3 months full-time work experience in your nominated occupation in Regional** Queensland immediately prior to submitting your EOI
  • provide evidence the work is ongoing for a further 12 months
  • commit to living and working in Queensland for
    • 2 years for a Subclass 190 visa
    • 3 years for a Subclass 491 visa

* Some occupations are subject to quotas:

South Australia open 70 occupations to offshore applicants

Is South Australia a sign of things to come across Australia? 

South Australia has opened its State Nomination program to offshore applicants from  Tuesday 28th September,  2021. Hopefully it is the first of all states & territories opening up to nominating offshore applicants.
