Australian Government has announced a doubling of migration numbers for 2022-23

Australian visa grants to increase

The Australian treasury’s mid year economic plan has shown that migration levels in 2022-23 are expected to almost double from 96,000 to 180,000.

The earlier than expected reopening of the borders to a number of different visa holders –  almost 6 months earlier than planned – is one of the reasons.  In addition migration is seen as a key policy to drive economic growth and fill skilled shortages post COVID.

Migration expected to return to pre-COVID levels next financial year, Treasury predicts

However the emergence of the omicron variant, and the demand they place on health resources, may mean these plans are shelved or revised.

The DHA will reveal more details of their planning in due course.
