WA skilled visas open for nomination 

Western Australia have opened their state nomination program!

WA are now open to nominate applicants under the visas below:

  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491)

There are a significant number of occupations. Some occupations require current employment in WA for a nomination. Others do not. 

Some occupations are eligible for the Subclass 190. Others the Subclass 491.

As we are primarily focused on applicants outside Australia the attention below is on those applicants

These requirements   are not all listed here, so the occupation alone can’t be taken as a pathway to achieve nomination by WA and a visa approval.

Western Australia to double state nominated visas for 2024 to 2025

WA  doubles it’s State Nominated Migration Program (SNMP) for new financial year  

WA State/Territory nominated visas

WA have announced that they will have 5,000 places in the 2024 to 2025 financial year for their  state nominated visa program. These visas are the Subclass 190 & Subclass 491 visas.

This is a significant increase from the 2,350 they had last year – 2023 to 2024.

The SNMP program that year was closed early, in February 2024, as the places had been exhausted. At the time WA made it clear that they needed more visa numbers.

“The State Government continues to advocate for nomination allocation numbers that meet the needs of the State.”

The doubling of numbers reflects the critical skills shortages in construction and healthcare.

2024 to 2025 – WA occupation lists to be finalised

The WA Skilled migration occupation lists (WASMOL) for 2024 to 2025 are yet to finalised. We will publish them when they are.

DAMA Agreements

There has also been an increase in the number of places, and occupations, made available under a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA).

Applicants for a visa under a DAMA need to be sponsored by an employer operating in a designated region, and for an occupation that is specified in the DAMA agreement.

Closure of the WA State Nominated Migration Program applications for 2023-24

WA closes program  for 2023/24 

On the 2nd February 2024, effective immediately, WA have closed their state nomination program for the Subclass 190 & Subclass 491 visas.

Full details are available on their website – migration.wa.gov.au

There is no indication at present what occupations will be on the WA occupations lists for 2024-25. However the recent  WA list  may provide some guidance.

To be considered for nomination WA will require applicants to have an occupation on the appropriate list, meet any specific occupation requirements (e.g. years of experience, english language ability, registration) .

If you are considering applying for a state/territory nomination visa you should consider your options now.

Applicants will need to have evidence of their skills assessment, english language tests and work experience at a minimum.

Limited Options for Western Australia state nominated skilled visas

Western Australia have announced their skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL).

As of 21 June, 2017  only 18 occupations can be applied for under the Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) visa and the Subclass 489 Skilled Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 489) state/territory nominated visa.

This is a significant reduction from previous WASMOL’s, where more than 100 occupations could be applied for.

Strict Criteria – including a 12 month contract of employment

Amongst various requirements, all applicants will be required to have a contract of employment for full-time employment for at least 12 months in the nominated or a closely related occupation.

Western Australia Skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL) – due to be updated late May 2017

As detailed in a previous post the Western Australian skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL) is currently operating under an interim list. The list includes only medical and health care occupations.

If your occupation is on this list you may be considered for the Skilled Nominated (Subclass 190) Visa and the Skilled Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 489) Visa. As a starting point however, you should look at whether you are eligible for a Skilled Independent (Subclass 189) visa.

Interim Western Australian skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL)

Western Australia have announced a interim skilled occupation list. This will be in place until the WASMOL is released on May, 2017.

The relevant statement from Skilled Migration Western Australia is detailed below:

“New applications for the State Nominated Migration Program are being accepted with an interim Western Australian skilled migration occupation list (WASMOL) targeting those occupations which are of a specialist nature and have compelling evidence of unmet demand at a State level.

The State Government will be consulting with industry to develop a new list which is expected to be complete and operational in late May 2017.”

Western Australia Skilled Migration Occupation List (WASMOL)

The Western Australia government has announced that their skilled migration list is currently under review. A new WASMOL will be issued when the review is finished.

We will provide details about any changes when they become available.

If you wish to apply of nomination by Western Australian now, you will need to apply under the current WASMOL .

Recent changes to the WASMOL

There has been two amendments made to the WASMOL recently. These are detailed below. If you intend to apply, or you are waiting for nomination, for these occupations you will not be approved.

  • ANZSCO 133512 Production manager (Manufacturing); and
  • ANZSCO 141111 Cafe or Restaurant Manager.
